Mr. Pete, Where Are Your Feet? by Katherine Bartlett is a children's book with an awesome story. This book is based on the authors pet birds and one of them was born with feet that are different from other birds. In the story he figures out that he is different. He is worried that his Mom won't love him but quickly finds out that's just not true. She loves him just the way he is.
My girls have some medical issues that cause them to feel different. Both have glasses and hearing loss. My oldest is looking into possibly getting hearing aids. At such a young age it can be easy to forget that being different is not the end of the world. Books like this help them cope with the changes that are coming. It helps reinforce that being unique is a good thing. It also helps to teach acceptance of those that may be different from them.
My girls really loved seeing pictures of the actual birds that the characters are based off of at the end. They really thought that was neat. We look forward to more stories about these birds.
